While radon is present everywhere, and there is no known, safe level, your greatest exposure is where it can concentrate – indoors. And where you spend most of your time – at home. Your home can be old or new, well-sealed or drafty, and with or without a basement.

Since radon is produced from soil, it is present nearly everywhere. Because soil is porous, radon gas is able to move up through the dirt and rocks and into the air, we breathe. If allowed to accumulate, radon becomes a health concern. Two components that affect how much radon will accumulate in a home are pathways and air pressure. These components will differ from home to home.

Radon gas is created by the decay of uranium and sometimes gets trapped in underground water reserves and aquifers at high pressure. When this radon-contaminated water leaves your tap, the radon gas is released into your home. Because of this, well water sources are the most likely to have radon problems.

Is there radon in the Well water?

Yes, sometimes. If the radon gas levels in your home are high and you get your water from a private well, there’s a good chance you’ve also got radon in your well water. Drinking radon in water can cause stomach and other internal organ cancers. Radon gas escapes from well water whenever you open a faucet, use the kitchen sprayer, shower, do laundry, or boil or evaporate water. So you owe it to yourself and your family to test for radon in your well water and install a radon water mitigation system if the results exceed recommended levels.
